Social network analytics tool Socialbakers still says Facebook has 4.6 million users in Japan for some reason, but Facebook Japan itself now claims it has 5 million active users in this country (active=all users who logged in at least once in the last 30 days). TechCrunch Japan reported the newest number earlier today.
Facebook’s Japan country growth Taro Kodama has personally confirmed the new milestone on tech news site CNET Japan.
This is obviously a pretty big step and symbolic win for Facebook in Japan even though its closest rival Mixi still seems to be far ahead, boasting 15 million active users.

According to Facebook’s publicly-available advertising system, estimated reach for all users in Japan is 4,633,300 persons. As Socialbakers and many of the other Facebook monitoring companies use the same data source, they arrive at the same conclusion. Whether this figure represented Facebook’s MAU or the total registered users within a given country, however, was a question I never considered. It’ll be interesting to see how the data change over the next few months.
