Mixi just announced that from today, it will be possible to register on the social network for owners of Android users. Until now, Mixi required a Japanese cell phone number and cell phone email address on a feature phone for registration (iPhone users have been able to register with their information since September last year).
Mixi has been seeing rapid traffic coming from smartphones in recent months (see graphic below), especially after having launched Mixi Touch, a touch control version of the site in May last year.
The rapid adoption Android is currently seeing on the Japanese cell phone market (half of the 20 cell phones Docomo is expected to debut this week are said to be Android phones) is another explanation for Mixi’s decision today.
